Tarpon
Appearance: Tarpon are silver in overall appearance, with a dark green back. They have a large mouth that is upward sloping. In general, they resemble a giant shiner.
Size: In the majority of Texas, the tarpon found seasonally are large, migrating fish in the 75 to 150 pound range. Along the Middle and Lower Coast, some smaller fish in the 25 to 50 pound range are also commonly found.
Where it's found: Upper Coast anglers have the shortest window of opportunity, usually the months of June, July and August. Mid-coast fishermen see fish a bit longer, while Lower Coast anglers usually see fish from May into November.
What it eats: Tarpon have a long list of menu items, including crabs, jumbo shrimp, sardines, menhaden, mullet, ladyfish, hardhead catfish and pretty much anything else that swims in salt water.
Top lures & baits: Live baits such as mullet, ladyfish, crab, jumbo shrimp and sardines are good choices. Artificial lures resembling these prey items also draw strikes.
How it tastes: No food value.
Texas Bag & Size Limits: 1 fish over 85 inches may be retained.
