Kingfish
Appearance: Kingfish are sleek and elongated, silvery in color with a greenish-blue back and a mouth full of razor sharp teeth.

Size: The majority of kingfish caught close to shore are between 10 and 20 pounds. Every now and then, larger kings will cruise close to the beach, but most true 'smoker' kings are taken a bit further offshore.

Where it's found: Kingfish are found in the bluewater off the Texas coast year around. However, during the summer and fall, they are found within sight of dry land. During this time, they also can be found in the Gulf passes along the Lower Texas Coast.

What it eats: Kingfish eat a wide variety of baitfish such as mullet, ballyhoo, Spanish sardines, cigar minnows and pinfish.

Top lures & baits: Live baits ribbonfish, ballyhoo, mullet, and Spanish sardines are excellent. Large spoons and plugs also work well when kings are found inshore.

How it tastes: Kingfish have a fairly strong taste. Some people love them, others do not.
